Alsager lies close to the Staffordshire border and is surrounded by farmland. The name is described as ‘Alisacher’ in 1288 and is derived from ‘Aelle’s field’.
Alsager Station lies on the Crewe to Derby line and the Trent and Mersey Canal is not far away.
Today Alsager is possibly best known for its university campus which was originally one of the teaching colleges set up in former barracks for emergency teaching of men whom had left the forces after the second world war. They were needed to teach the ‘post war bulge’ of children born to couples reunited after the wartime separation.
