Buxton

Buxton is surrounded by hedgerows, streams, cliffs, outcrops and natural heritage literally teeming with birds and wildlife.  From upland oak woodland and moorland to dipper, flowers, insects and ground nesting birds.  Bluebells to wood warbler, pied flycatcher, wildflowers and butterflies, the area has it all!

Once a magnificent 18th Century stable block, it is now the new campus of the University of Derby in Buxton. The Slate Dome was errected in 1882 for the Royal Devonshire Hospital and is over 150ft in diameter, bigger than St Paul's Cathedral.  The vast central space beneath the dome is home to cafés, shops, restaurants and study spaces. Pop in for a coffee and watch the gentle swing of the Foucault pendulum hanging from the centre of the dome.

Buxton Opera House was restored to its former glory in 2001 and is one of Britain’s leading provincial theatres.  It has around 450 performances each year including dance, comedy, children’s shows, drama, music, pantomime, opera and even shows on ice!  As well as a lively Fringe Theatre, the Opera House is also home to the prestigious Buxton Festival and The International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival and The Four Four Time Festival of Live Music.

The great carboniferous limestone Poole's Cavern is one of the finest show caves in England and boasts many wondrous formations, sculptured over millions of years. Mary, Queen of Scots was said to have visited and people have coming ever since.
