At the end of Hoylake promenade is ‘Kings Gap’ named after the day when Prince William of Orange joined his ships at the Hoyle Lake in order to travel with his 10,000 strong army to Ireland and his meeting with King James. Off Kings Gap stands Hoylake lighthouse which is now a private house.
Hoylake is the home of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, and is the second oldest golf links in England. It has hosted many major tournaments such as The Open Championship and the Walker Cup. It hosted the Open in 2006 when Tiger Woods earned the Claret Jug for the second year in a row.
Hoylake is one of the premier sites for Sand Yachting in Britain, with banks around a quarter of a mile offshore. The beach was the venue for the European Sand Yacht Championships in 16 September 2007.
Hoylake Sailing Club was founded in 1887 starting racing Opera Class boats in 1902. There are 15 Operas listed in the Club Programme and regular racing with them still takes place.
The local sand dunes, Red Rocks Marsh, are home to the natterjack toad and other endangered species.
